The King’s Of The Stone Age, a new nine-CD set from Empress Valley, contains the complete (previously unreleased) soundboard recording from Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York February 13, 1975. The recording takes up the first 3 CDs of the set. The previously unreleased February 13 1975 show is the one of importance, and this thing is a monster. A 42 minute long version of "Dazed And Confused", 20 minutes of "No Quarter" and Ron Wood of The Rolling Stones joining in for a raucous take on encore "Communication Breakdown". This is a must have for all Zeppelin fans obsessive and casual. New chapter of the SOUNDBOARD REVOLUTION: THE KING’S (sic) OF THE STONE AGE offers for the first time the soundboard recording of the LZ concert at NASSAU COLISUEM on February 13 1975. First out of the gate from the Japanese bootleg labels, EMPRESS VALLEY releases as the first edition a 9 cd box set. The first three cds have the soundboard recording of the Feb 13 show, cds 4/5/6 contains the soundboard recording of the second date (feb 14) at Nassau Coliseum (and are a copy of the bootleg ST VALENTINE DAY’S MASSACRE released by EVSD time ago), cds 7/8/9 offer the audience recording of the Feb 13 concert (they are a copy of the bootleg FIGHTING BACK AT THE COLISEUM).
We will discuss only the first three cds and focus on this new beautiful soundboard recording of the feb 13 concert. I recommend that you seek out the edited version by DADGAD, a famous Italian ledhead with remastering skills.The EVSD title is brickwalled, which means that they pumped every sound wave over the 0.0 point. Beyond that point the sound begins to distort and it twists and turns. The DADGAD fellow tried to remedy this situation, and his version sounds smoother and much more friendly on the ears.
I have listened to the show twice and have to say that it is probably my favorite 1975 performance among the other soundboards from this tour. PLANT is still getting stuck in the mud with his vox problems of the 1975 American tour, but PAGE guitar playing is – this time – fluid and coherent; a really pleasant surprise. Disc one rolls along well, even though it’s the one where PLANT struggles the most with his voice. During TSRTS PAGE is clean and the band is like a high speed train. Also here PLANT introduces IN MY TIME OF DYING as the first song from the new album, maybe he does not consider SICK AGAIN a PG track. In RAIN SONG and KASHMIR ROBERT’s voice is more warm.
NO QUARTER is very good. Perhaps the band does not reach the surreal depth of other 1975 American Tour moments, but everything is precise and in focus. Between minutes 12 and 13 you start to fly high anyway; the pattern that JPJ keeps with his feet on the pedal bass while playing another part with his hands is not easy…what a musician. The guitar solo in TRAMPLED UF is not very inspired, but after 20 minutes of guitar improvisation in NO QUARTER, it is understandable. PAGE is more precise than usual during MOBY DICK. BONHAM is always BONHAM during the whole show.
Not bad at all RP on disc two, or rather I must say I like him very much. Maybe I have listened to too many LZ bootlegs, but that voice when it is tired, hoarse and always near to break down point has a particular charm.. It has a vibe taken from real life, a deeply-felt hue that hits your soul, so you get emotions just like when you see a 40-years old footballer doing a sprint along the pitch and then kicks the ball with a cross that reaches the forward player with the features of a prince who will hit the ball with his head for another beautiful goal (FC Inter reference).
DAZED AND CONFUSED: 41 minutes of gloomy, deep and complete music. PAGE is very clean again during the SAN FRANCISCO arpeggio, then – after the Violin Bow section – heads down again into the turbulent waters. Electric hail, thunder and lightning, visions of hell…how a guitar player can maintain the level of improvisations so high night after night is a mystery to me. Page producer, composer, visionary…yeah, that’s true but also, first of all, lead guitarist, like no other in rock music. The final part of the show is well done too, and it happens far too infrequently with LZ of the “lost horizons” era. STAIRWAY is very good, (maybe the PAGE solo is not too inspired butit is well played) and WLL and BLACK DOG are very good.. The link between the two songs with theremin and the funk groove is irresistible in some moments.
It’s curious how PAGE often mess about with the WLL intro riff. It’s a simple riff from appearances but I believe that it’s not easy to make it work in a live situation. I have never seen anybody play that riff in a convincing way. It’s just a three note riff, easy guitar position, but something is always missing. Sure, you’d expect PAGE – the creator – would play it in the right way but even he is incapable of delivering a convincing version. A cursed riff.
COMMUNICATION B is the final encore starring RON WOOD. It’s a jam session…some wrong chords, a bit of confusion but in the end a nice version. In the mid seventies WOOD was at his zenith, and his participation is good.
I confirm my first impression: this is my fave bootleg of the 1975 American return tour od LED ZEPPELIN.
